ARO finishes in top ten in JRA Best Workplaces Awards

Posted: 21 November 2011

ARO is proud to announce it's success in the JRA Best Workplaces Awards 2011, finishing in the top ten in the small business category at the awards ceremony held at the Langham Hotel in Auckland on Thursday 17 November.  This is ARO's third consecutive year as a finalist and is another great milestone for the organisation.

This great achievement represents the outstanding working environment at ARO and their commitment to their employees.  The process involved staff completing a workplace climate and employee engagement survey which measured key areas of employee satisfaction, then compared ARO to companies of a similar size.

ARO are looking forward to the year ahead with positive and enthusiastic staff to build and maintain their exceptional work culture.  Denise Redwood, the manager of ARO, commented on the survey answers, "What is exciting for the management team is to see that our highest rating questions related to high standards of performance, belief in the organisation, feeling that they worked for a successful organisation and belief in their leadership. This is such a strong foundation to build on and we look forward to maintaining these high standards and supporting our team to do even greater things in years to come".

New research project for women undergoing radiation therapy

Posted: 01 February 2011

One of the major concerns for women undergoing radiation therapy to the breast area is the extent of the skin reaction or "burning" they might experience.  This is a very individual reaction to the treatment and the amount of skin changes vary greatly from patient to patient, dependant on skin type, age and lifestyle amongst other things.  The team at ARO is about to embark on a research project in conjunction with three other centres around New Zealand to investigate the use of silicon based dressing that shows promise in reducing skin reactions in patients receiving radiation therapy to the breast and chest wall.

The dressings were originally designed for the treatment of burns.  They adhere to healthy skin, do not stick to wounds nor react to chemicals in or on the skin.  A pilot study conducted in Dunedin in 2008 showed that these silicon dressings significantly reduced the amount of radiation induced skin changes compared with the use of standard skin treatments.  These results are reflected in other international studies and the ARO team are looking forward to being able to offer this improvement to their patients in due course.

It is expected this study will get underway in February 2011.
